Post Red Light Green Light
Thi is an old game that I am using to teach verb phrases to kids. It is a great game for kids who want to run around. Teach your target phrases such as "brush your teeth", "comb your hair", "cook the food", etc. Then you can use it inside the game. The main idea for the game is green light - run around, yellow light - walk around, and red light - freeze like a statue. Anyone not following the instructions has to stop and sit outside the play area. Once the kids understood the game, I incorporated the phrases as well. Anyone not doing the actions of the phrases was also out. Sometimes let the freeze last for a minute and see who can hold their pose before falling or scratching their nose.

I've never played this game with a class but I play it a lot with my kids. We like to invent lots of different things to do for each of the light colors. We even have pink light where the person has to dance like a balerina or blue light where the person has to act like a chicken. I hadn't thought of using it with my English students but it could be fun...I'll give it a try!

This game is really great, tried hundreds of variations. After the children have learned the game, you could also try make them the 'teachers', so that one of them is the leader giving instructions. They love it! We usually then start the game with one brave volunteer saying: 'I am your English teacher, do as i say!'. The teacher (yes, you:) ) is of course forced to obey too:)
