Post Second- Year- Teacher Salary in Japan
If a teacher has a year experience in Japan teaching and gets the standard 250,000 yen per year, does anyone know what the usual second contract salary is? For example, 260,000 yen, a bonus? etc. Thank you. Happy New Year.

This question made me smile. :)

There is no rule in place that a school has to give you a raise. Japanese workers actually have been taking pay-cuts year after year. Hopefully the new Abenomics will start to improve things for the future. All that said, I imagine your school will give you a little extra for the second year, but don't be too upset if it's not 10,000 yen.

250,000 is pretty good going when you consider how salary have been dropping over the last several years.

As Becki said, there is no guarantee of a pay rise.

I thought you were asking the question, because you are hiring someone.

I agree with everyone else in that teachers really shouldn't expect a pay raise after one year. Only because nobody gives them one. They'd rather just hire a new teacher and maybe at a lower salary.

However, if you have an employee and they are doing a good job, ¥10,000 is a 4% pay increase and very reasonable, assuming the school has the money. You could give the raise but also tell them not to expect it every year.

Sorry if I misled anyone, but yea I am the one paying. I have a small school. I've had teachers before but one went back to her home country after a year, another moved to Tokyo and got married, another went back to school, so this is the first time I have a teacher staying for 2 years. Thanks for the feedback.

Sorry I read that wrong. I think a 10,000 yen raise is quite acceptable. And, you could offer a bonus (1 month pay) after the completion of 2 years. I think that's pretty standard.

I was in a company that gave out small increases with good efforts
but this is not the rule. For the most part, wages do not go up but then you are not doing a full 40 hr week and have to do lots of free overtime like some Japanese workers do (outside this industry)
