Post a little bit flustered.
hi,
could anyone point me in the right direction regarding eliciting silverware? i have been trying to come up with some ideas, but they all
end up a bit long winded.

Do you mean you are just trying to get them to say the vocabulary?

A simple way would be:

Teacher: You eat spaghetti with ... ???
Students: A fork.

Teacher: You cut steak with ... ???
Students: A knife.


I actually use the tableware and kitchen items to introduce clauses with 'when'

Teacher: When you eat spaghetti, do you use a spoon or a fork?
Students: I use a fork.

Teacher: When you eat soup, do you use a knife or a spoon?
Students: I use a spoon.

hi again,
having just looked at the post again i'm not trying to elicit knife,fork etc, i am actually trying to think of a way to teach the word silverware itself!

Ade - for category type words, try starting with things they already know.

list some fruits: strawberry, banana, grapes, kiwi. Then explain that those are "fruit". list some sports: soccer, basketball, baseball, ... The explain that those are "sports".

Once the students understand that you are talking about groups, list some silverware: fork, spoon, knife. Then, explain that those are "silverware".

It's very helpful to use groups and multiple examples. It can also help to give examples of things that are not in the group. I've found that teaching what is excluded can really clarify what the group word encompasses.

So, for the 'silverware' example, you could explain that 'pot', 'plate', 'glass' and 'napkin' are not 'silverware'.
