can you tell us a little more about what you've been doing with her?

how does your lesson currently run?

Are you meeting every day? for how long?

I work as an au pair, so there aren't formal classes, the family doesn't expect it to be, we've been doing some vocab and I've tried playing board games, card games and flashcard games with the vocab but it's just that I don't know what to teach her because she still 8, so we can't really move on to more complex vocab.

I give her 5hrs every day, I try to do half in spanish and half in english, which is what I'm asked to do, but I've never taught spanish before (it's my mother tongue) and she gets frustrated very easily...

Now that she sees I'm struggling to find stuff to do she's getting more dominant and less responsive.

help!!

5 hours every day 1 on 1.... my god.... Sorry but that sounds horrible!
not sure what help I can suggest... I would teach English for an hour, then do creative things like just playing in English, some cooking, science experiments, watch some educational shows, going for walks, etc... Guess variety would be key.

Try to walk with her somewhere, for example in the park (Make sure you take all necessary dolls and other toys, just in case), and present her all objects on your way on English of course, so she can understand the meaning of just learned word by seeing live object..

Have you considered teaching her English via different mediums?

Instead of thing like flashcards and other classroom based activities, try doing non classroom stuff in English.

Bake a cake and explain what to do in English.

Go to the zoo and talk about the animals in English.

Watch a short TV show/cartoon together and ask her what she thought of it in English.

I agree with gankoba. That's a really long time for an 8-year-old child to stay focused. I would try to find out what she's interested in and do activities that she enjoys. Think of it more as an immersion program. Have fun doing activities she likes, but keep the communication in English or Spanish (whichever you're doing at the moment). You might want to ask her to teach you some games or have her tell you about her favorite toys.
