Post TEFL course,,,any suggestions?
Hey everyone, i am thinking about doing an online TEFL course now that both my kids are at nursary and i have more time to myself to study. I am rather ashamed that i have been teaching for the past year without qualification, which is why i am looking for a reliable TEFL course, problem is,,,there are SO MANY!! which one to choose from i dont know. Does anyone have any suggestions?

To offer you a not so comforting response ... I don't think it matters much which one you choose if you are choosing one that's fully on-line.

What I would suggest is going with something that is at least weighted 100 hours or more.

I think just about every site lists that they are accredited, but whether that "authority" has any authority is also questionable. So, I wouldn't let that be my deciding factor.

I'd say go with a popular one and one that best suits your budget.

You can also try here

It's a tefl course review website, run by the owner of who is not affiliated with any TEFL program. It's designed to be a peer feedback website, but I have to be honest, I haven't really looked at it.

Not in the question. The other option is something with a live teaching component or workshop component. I think those are offered in larger cities from time to time. So, in Japan, maybe Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, etc.

Anyway, it probably won't matter to an employer (on-line or live) and if you are just looking to get your feet wet with a little education, on-line is just as good a place to start as any. However, they usually don't offer more than a good book on teaching ESL has to teach you (but they do offer certificates of completion which you don't get with the book.)

Build up! Be positive! Teach hard!

Thanks for replying Mark, i am quite anxious to start as soon as possible but with sooo many sites, am sure anyone clever enough can design a legitimate looking website, i dont feel easy sharing card details to the first high rated TEFL course site. But i did take a look at the list you sent me. Thanks.
Oh and i love your halloween pictures!!! the picture taking spot as well! fresh ideas there,,,its great! am sure the kids love it.

I did a TEFL course ( recently that was a complete waste of time, but years ago I did a young learners course that I thought was very good: I learned a lot from that one, but it's specifically a YL course. It's also quite expensive. If you're goal is to put TEFL on your resume, then maybe you should look somewhere else. If you want to learn something I recommend

I may depend on why you want to do the course. If the main objective is to get future jobs, then accreditation may be a vital factor. A good plan might be to get in touch with major hirers of ESL teachers in your area, and find out exactly what kind of qualifications they're looking for. I know someone who spent quite a lot of money on a course and found the "certificate" she got at the end of it was virtually useless because it wasn't recognised by employers or the bodies that validate private language schools. There are quite a lot of companies that make money from peddling certificates of questionable value. Beware.
