|Post subject:||Where to start with adults|
This may have been covered, but I have been reading the post here concerning teaching adults conversation English. I want to know where to start. Ages will range from teens and up (70yrs) with it mostly being Adults. I currently teach English in Elementary and Jr. High and think that this class may be quite different. Without knowing their conversation level as of right now, I must wait to see. I was just looking for any help. I've seen a few post that reccomend books and the like but I don't know how this will apply when it's and English conversation class. Anyway, any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

|Post subject:||Adult learners|
I have been teaching adult learners for about 5 years now and have found that a few things are vital.
1. It is essential to have a background of your student. Find out why they want to learn the language and some personal information i.e. job, interests, etc.
2. Adults differ to kids in that they want to know that what they are learning will be immediately applicable to them. When they leave the classroom, they must feel that they can go out and actually use the language you have taught.
So my advice to you is, start with the basics obviously. Introductions, personal information. Then move on to daily actions and events. Routines, actions, food, etc. Use a lot of gestures and acting and put them in the context that you are teaching. Use a lot of props to do this. So if you are teaching restaurant vocabulary and phrases, bring in some menus and act as the waiter. Once you are directly put into a situation, understanding the language becomes so much easier. There are after all only a very limited set of questions and responses that one would use in any given situation.
Hope that helps and good luck!!!
