If you are teaching in a one to one setting, I would suggest reading aloud picture books to the child. In one activity the student can improve their listening and speaking, find models for good writing, increase their vocabulary and most importantly improve their reading skills.

I used this activity with my own private tutoring sessions of 4 and 6 years old students. My students were really motivated to improve their English after I started reading to them.

A good resource is The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease, Penguin Books

Hope this helps! :)

Hiya, am a little stuck and hoping for some advice. I teach a 5 year old at my home once a week.... The childs mother wants simple converstion, But how can i teach this gal everyday talk.

Hi there,

Try this site for parents and private tutors teaching a child one on one:

The games there are aimed at beginners so use them to learn and practise vocabulary and short sentences. Conversation has to be built on foundations, one can't do it out of thin air! (honestly these mums!)

Even though, this last yaears post would availabled for me.
I can understand the first person who posted this topic.
Teaching for small children is quite difficult.
I use often puppet for talking with them.
That makes them much easy to talk.

I sometimes have 3 hours with 1 kid whose 5 years old so I have a few things that he always wants to do.

Main one is board games--the mes english ones are good, but if you can make your own, and incorporate many themes into it. Have fruits at the beginning, them a space for 'which fruit do you like' so if he can answer 'i like apples' he gets another go. Or 'what fruit is big' Moving along you could use colours, vegetables, animals, body parts, everything!!

Card Concentration--have 2 of each card upside down on the floor and in turns, try to match the cards.

Do you have--I use ABC cards, Do you have C yes i do, no i dont
Deal 5-10 cards each, pairs on the table.

Using blank piece of paper, draw naughts and crosses board and in each box, draw something in the current theme. 9 fruits or 9 animals etc (copying from the cards) then take turns guessing which animals etc they have on their sheet. Taking turns, whoever guesses a line wins
