Post Teaching to students from China
Help me please! :smt100

I have a contract coming up where I'll be teaching students visiting from China. Up until now, I've mainly taught to Japanese students, and a few Brazillian private students. Anyway, they'll be around 15 years of age. So what can I expect? Would their English converstaion be better than Japanese students of the same age? What sort of pronunciation problems do they have? ie Do they have the same problem with 'L' and 'R' sounds as the Japanese? What sorts of things can anyone suggest I tackle with them? Is there a site like MES especially with ideas for teaching Chinese students?

Thanks in advance!!

:D

Yes, there are several forums for ESL teachers working in China. If you put terms like ESL, forum and China into a search engine, you'll find them. These tend to be primarily concerned with the practicalities of living and and working in China rather than with the nuts and bolts of teaching - although there's plenty of material on that as well.

I taught in China a couple of years ago. If my experience is representative, I think you'll find Chinese students positive and easy-to-teach students. Their writing won't be great, for obvious reasons, but the main problem will be pronunciation. The sound system of Chinese is so utterly different that even quite advanced students may be difficult to understand. A particular problem is the tendency to leave the final consonant off the ends of words.
