Post A, AN and THE
I have a group of Japanese exchange students who are having a great deal of trouble with definite and indefinite articles. The don't seem to have any grasp of when and where to use them. They don't have A, AN and THE in Japanese, so the concept is foriegn to them. They mix up A and THE a lot. eg I watched the DVD. I'm staying at the house on the Pine Avenue.

Does anyone have any clue how I can teach it and how to reinforce it? Or any place I could find lesson plans?

By the way, they are 2nd year senior high school students. (16 years old) They have learnt the grammar at school for years and are at the stage where they find these concepts very confusing.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Cool! That's very helpful, Steve.
Obrigado :D

I don't suppose there'd be any activities that are fun!???????? It's proabaly just a case of memorizing and practising, but if there was a fun activity it'd make it easier to remember.

Post English articles
Here's an article dedicated to teaching English articles to people whose languages don't use articles.

This is the start:
http://englicious.com/Lessons/Articles/ ... tion01.php

...but here are general patterns of use, plus exceptions:

...and here are resources that you can download and use:

Hope that helps.

Thank you for the inspiration :) I have this one student preparing for CAE (!). She's really proficient in all grammar but articles :? . Throughout the year i tried thousands of books and exercises, which have made her aware of the existence of determiners, but still gets at leat 10 wrong in every essay... My Godness!
