Don't explain it. Model it!

yes often its so much easier just to model it a few times than to try to explain it
also for game rules etc

I believe they mean prepare a great deal of examples for each of your question terms and just show the students which one to use in which context. Maybe you ask the question and they just answer. After a few examples have them ask the question (this can be the exact same questions you just asked.)

It may seem like you are asking them to memorize each one individually and teaching them a rule would save time. However, you are actually teaching them the pattern by demonstrating the examples. The students will work out the rule or pattern for themselves, just like native speakers do.

It may take more time and you won't see immediate production by the students but I think it's a very good answer to your problem.

I think the difference relies on the context in which you can use those determiners, how much is only used with uncountable nouns, how many only with countable and how long with periods of time and physical distance. Try teaching them as fixed expressions.

Good Luck!
