R Controlled Vowels: These are vowel + r flash cards and handout set.
ar - car, star, arm, shark er - sister, brother, waiter, barber ir - shirt, skirt, girl, bird or - corn, fork, cord ur - church, nurse, curve, burger Definitely a helpful chunk of phonics for young readers. I teach these after the first set of vowel digraphs. I also tell them that er, ir, and ur are pronounced the same. The sound stays in the throat and the students should be able to feel their neck vibrating if they place their hand on their neck. On the other hand, the sound leaves the mouth with ar. That's a very simple explanation but very helpful in my opinion. Need Phonics worksheets? For more phonics materials and worksheets check out my phonics site: Fun Fonix.com.
