Listen to the show.

It's wet and wild in Japan. A Typhoon has landed and after the podcast Mark actually had to head out to do some volunteer fire fighter work. Saving the day!

This week we're back with part 2 of phonics order. Mark and Ron finish off phonics and what order they teach things. As well a that, they touch on some ideas for advanced phonics teaching and advanced learners.

Toward the end we touch on phonics for all ages and by the end of of a double header, we hope we have given you a few things to think about. If you are setting out your phonics curriculum, maybe we've offered some direction. if you already have your system set up, well ... maybe you'll get something from the show.

Game of the Week: Phonics Toss

This is a pretty easy game and designed for younger learners, but adults like to have fun as well. All you need is your phonics flashcards (make your own if you need to) and a few balls (wads of paper will work.) It's easy and people love it. Happy teaching!

Phonics is one way to help form autonomous readers. I found this list of research proven generalizations about reading. These come from Steven Krashen's website and there are 88 in total if you want to read the full list.
http://www.sdkrashen.com/handouts/88Generalizations/index.html

BENEFITS OF READING (from correlational studies)
1. More reading > better reading
2. More reading > better writing
3. More reading > more writing (SY Lee)
4. more reading > read faster (Anderson, Fielding)
5. more reading > know more about literature (Stanovich)
6. more reading > know more social science (Stanovich)
7. more reading > more cultural literacy (Stanovich)
8. more reading > have more practical knowledge (Stanovich)
9. more bible reading > more knowledge of bible than "study" (Filback)
10. more reading > better grades in writing class (SY Lee)
11. more reading > better TOEFL performance (Constantino, SY Lee, KS Cho; Gradman & Hanania)
12. more reading > less writing apprehension (SY Lee)
13. more reading > less writer's block (SY Lee)
14. more reading > less memory loss (Rice)
15. more reading > more hobbies, involvement in the world (NEA)
...

There's a lot more on reading via Dr. Krashen's website http://www.sdkrashen.com/

I want to throw something in here.

More reading, without good understanding of the phonetics system reinforces bad pronunciation... but you should still read more anyway

I don't have a source, it is my experience with advanced learners.

The two shows were pretty interesting since I'm also a Phonics nerd.

One of the things I was thankful for was that I was up on the technical jargon of 'phonics'. Wink

Overall, great job!
