Post suggestion for new project
Mark,
I just took a look at your projects and they are really fun to read through. They work well for exactly the reasons you wrote, it's not easy to find a partner school working on the same time schedule.

Here's a suggestion. How about 'My School Life' ? Students can use it to write 'We have (subjects)' In the morning/afternoon, before/after school,
At (time). and a little about sports and food (lunch)

The language is relevant to the students lives and I know that school life is very different around the world and it would be fun to compare.

What do you think?

Yeah, that sounds great. It would be pretty simple to do on this end (not a lot to write up really.) I can write it up and get it on the website, but it's best if I have at least one completed project available, so that other teachers have some idea of the project as a whole and what the students should do.

There's a lot that can be done with that.
- a general day outline, classes, breaks, lunch
- what lunch is like and a week's menu
- after school activities, practice, games/tournaments, best team, trophies won ...
- break time and what students usually do
- the school building and facilities

Would you be willing to start it off? ie. have your students do the project and wait for a response?

It usually takes about 2-3 months after posting it to the site before I get any projects back.

I was thinking a little more. It could also include

- homework; how much (frequency), what subjects, what they have to do, a sample (scanned copy,) grading
- vacations and what students usually do
- the school dress code; what isn't allowed and what students usually wear.

A large class could cover all these topics in small groups. A smaller class with just a few students could choose just one and write about that. Depending on recent language the class has been working on, one area might be more attractive than another.

Hi Mark,
I'll talk with my junior high school teachers. Hopefully they will want to take part. Would your project allow images? I was thinking a picture of school lunch and your homework idea sounds great too, Perhaps math homework would be the best understood. I will let you know what the teachers think tomorrow...

Mark,
It looks like the project on my end will have to be put on hold. This month the is mid-term tests, eiken and the school festival, so I thought it best to wait before approaching the teachers. I don't see that they would have a problem with it though. Sorry for bringing up the subject and then putting it on the backburner. I will let you know as soon as I can get things started with a few if not a whole class of students.

That's no problem. But, it doesn't really have to be put on hold, though. We can work out what the project should look like and get it up on the site. That would shorten the time it takes you to get a completed project from somewhere else. (They might start doing it the same time as you.)

Images are no problem. It's what I do here :D . As long as the images are pictures you or the students take yourselves, it's no problem at all. I (anyone for that matter) can't use random pictures taken off the net unless you have the permission from the site owner to use those images.

It seems like a really big project with a lot of little projects making up the whole. That's excellent! It could be one project that goes all year, or a project that you break up and have smaller groups of a big class work on different sections of. And, it all ends in one big presentation! (:cough: and submission to the MES V-Key Pals Project Library)

So for parts, target language and resources:

class schedule:
- subjects flashcards and a sample schedule and write up.
- target language: present tense/habitual actions, ordinal adverbs: then, next, after that... , days of the week

lunch:
- food/desserts/drinks flashcards and a sample write up
- target language: food

extra-curricular activities:
- sports flashcards, hobbies flashcards, maybe some new flashcards?, a sample write-up
- target language: quantifiers: some ~, a few ~, most ~, all ~; present tense/habitual actions; future if you add a game schedule for the next few weeks; seasons if the school has seasonal sports (In fall some students play ...); past if you want to talk about previous victories

break time:
- recess 1 and 2 flashcards, a sample write-up
- target language: adverbs of frequency; present tense/habitual action; quantifiers: some of ~, a few of ~, most of ~, all of ~

the school building:
- school flashcards, a sample write-up, maybe a blueprint type drawing
- target language: there is/are ... , 'have' for descriptions, adjectives, comparative/superlative

the staff and students: (students could introduce their teacher, principal ...)
- need some school staff flashcards (teacher, secretary, principal, cook, janitor ...) there was actually a request for these anyway, a sample write-up
- target language: there is/are ..., introducing and describing someone/third person singluar

the school dress code:
- clothing flashcards, a sample write up
- target language: can/be allowed to, have to/must, present continuos: describing a picture, 'He is wearing...'
(it would be cool if students would take some pictures of other students at that school and give us a visual with English explanation of how students are dressing. If the school requires school uniforms, maybe they could take a picture of friends outside of school as well.)

vacation/holiday activities:
- need some new flashcards or I'll have to compile some sets, a sample write-up
- target language: quantifiers: some ~, a few ~, most ~, all ~; present tense/habitual actions; future if students include what some students plan to do; past if they do a survey of what other students did last weekend or last break, adverbs of frequency: always, usually, sometimes, occasionally ...

school events: a dance, school festival/carnival, sports day ...
- not much to prepare maybe just a sample write-up
- target language: future if you talk about an upcoming even, past if you talk about a past event, or even present perfect if you want to talk about what schools have done and are doing year to year.

Well, that's a start and a window to my madness. if you have anything to add or anything you think we should change, let me know.

Anyone else reading this is free to jump on the bandwagon! :D The more, the merrier.

Hello, Mark
This seems to be a kind of " all my life at Mark's place"; students will be able to write and write and ... not get to the end :D
Well, just in case, what about if ... some photos of their towns, the places where they live, their monuments, their traditions... if it is to be big, let's do it bigger.
My students usually like to have a look at others' works and they love the photos. I think they would appreciate a kind of city tour around the world..
By the way, did you receive my " family game"?
Olinda

Olinda - Thanks I did get the family game. Sorry I haven't responded yet. I really like the idea. The same idea could be done with the family gameboard: www.mes-english.com/worksheets/flashcards/family.php but I like the 'family tree' idea.

'My Town' a new V-Key Pals Project! That, in and of itself, could be a really big project.
- town layout, stores, areas of interest
- entertainment, what people do for fun
- events
- a park: describe it and what people generally do there (a lead in to the Perfect Park Project)

I like it! Again a teacher could do just pieces of that project and 'the School Life' project, just one project, or both! I have a couple other projects I'm working on getting up as well. Maybe the project section will finally fill out a bit.

(I haven't forgotten about 'the Healthy Eating Project.')

I feel busy all of a sudden. :-D
